You’d only get the lathe out and ‘turn’ it into a truncheon.
    Remarkably hard and solid…olive wood.

We all have our tactics Swale. yours is to deny the assertion, then claim its from a biased source, then call the originator names, then tell the originator and anyone else in your line of sight to **** off. Not my style, but to each their own.

Glad however that you understand the comment about mental health. rA seemed to miss, and I hope you didn't, the point that such insults may be water off a duck's back to the intended receiver, but may impact those in hearing/reading proximity. Its something I'm fairly hot on, for example I've modified a bad habit I had (in fact I think I've used it on here) of 'picking on' correcting syntax and grammar errors - 90% is just laziness but I've decided to suppress my own smugness for the sake of the 10% who may have a genuine problem such as dyslexia

Sumwan cud of accused me, in the past, of doing the same to are language n a 2 av dun this.

At first it was the English teacher in me that rose to the fore and I posted explanations, eg. the difference between your, you're and yore OR there, their and they're OR are and our.

I think we all know the biggest "culprit" with the former. As you suggest, AF, most of it is just laziness, some is attributable to things like dyslexia. There's also a 3rd cause, namely, predictive text.

I still greatly dislike of instead of have etc but have learnt to rein myself in.

For the benefit of any posters who may have been a little confused by my opening abomination of a sentence, here it is again plus what it should be.

Someone could have accused me, in the past, of doing the same to our language and I too have done this.

Hmmm. I didn’t miss it Andy, I’m just inclined to agree with Swale on this one, which will doubtless cause you much mirth.
As regards Tricky I do remember him being vile to a fellow Forest supporter both on here and his own forum. Can’t remember the guy’s name - it was a while ago - but he was clearly getting on a bit and, from what I gathered, he wasn’t very well either. Tricky’s ‘clock’s ticking’ jibes were relentlessly unkind so my sympathy is limited.

He also tried it with me when he and another former poster got stuck into me for post after post about being a retired teacher. Tbh it didn’t make the slightest difference to me…water off a duck’s back…but it got personal and is something that you and GP were all too keen to do too. (Wonder why it’s always the same three.) I’ve no idea what the relevance of occupations, or former occupations, is, but it was all designed to undermine and you’re maybe not so squeaky clean yourself in that respect.

On the subject of grammar. It’s easy to pick up on the ‘weaknesses’ of others and, imo, being literate is indeed a crucial tool, but you’re fortunate to have a decent command of language and might do well to remember that those with ‘difficulties’ often have at least as much to offer in terms of common sense contributions. As an example I give you ‘Mista’…a much missed (imo) former poster with very eccentric/poor literacy skills who made more sense - about both football and ‘life’ - than most.

When it comes to dyslexic posters, nobody could match the legend that was B4 (RIP Daniel). He was a classic and got a lot of aggro online until people realised he was seriously dyslexic. I remember years ago, he couldn't get a job because he was unable to put together a legible CV. I offered to help him and we'd made a start when Elaine Dean also offered. Her being local and me not made it eminently sensible for her to take over the "baton".

Never known such a fanatical Rams supporter and his battle cries, including the legendary plea not to forget your "flanges and scravers" will go down in history. He passed last November, aged just 38. Got the minute's applause at the next home game and, during the applause, Owen Bradley waxed lyrical about B4. Most definitely the most dyslexic person I've ever come across and 100% Derby, through and through.

I might still highlight some classic howlers, especially from people who "ought to know better" but I shall not be lampooning those who obviously CAN'T do better.

Ah yes I recall the "tick tock" from before it became a social media platform. I can't remember the posters name but I recall he gave as much as he got.

I think we have to accept platforms such as these are not kind and people will say stuff on here that they wouldn't say face to face ( well probably wouldn't anyway). Doesn't make it right but I doubt it's just an issue that afflicts this forum.

Back in the Bloomer days it wasn't any better - Rats v Swale etc and bolstered by a mod

No its beyond mirth now rA, and beyond either using the overused epithet or even commenting on, its just expected. At least you're loyal, you did it on page 1 of the Brexit thread. End of discussion point if you can do the same

I'm aware of Tricky's 'previous' but also some of the 'previous' of other forum members

Not sure you'll find a lot of reference from me to your former profession, certainly not from a 'joining in' perspective. Not sure what your point is about 'squeaky clean' but I'll let it pass.
Also not sure if you're agreeing with me or lecturing me on the grammar thing, but coincidentally it was, omongst other things, mista's quirky posts that got me thinking about my 'cleverdickyness' re language use. I agree with MA about of/have, there are a number of such teeth-grinding examples but I made a conscious decision to let as much as possible pass, no-one's prefect
