An 86-year-old woman has been convicted by a fast-track court after she accidentally got one letter wrong on her car insurance papers.
The pensioner, from York, applied for a year's worth of cover for her Suzuki Splash car with Swinton Insurance, believing she was fully complying with the law.
However, she had written an F down as part of her number plate instead of an S, rendering the insurance technically invalid.
She was handed a three-month conditional discharge instead of a fine, but also ordered to pay a ?26 victim surcharge.

I can check on line in 5mins if a cars insured just put a registration in & it comes up make , model & colour surely the insurance company must have know that registration was wrong for that car.

True, they could check, but it's not a guarantee of anything as new cars may well run with batches of plates - they certainly have done that in the past, so a few would be very similar. The driver you've described also happens to sit in the age range who have (by some distance) the most accidents per mile covered, so there's a question mark around general competency with drivers - an area which is obviously quite emotive and doesn't get questioned as much as it might, given the chances of accidents.

At least it seems the DVLA are displaying a little common sense. Following media attention, the DVLA stated they would review the case and seek to overturn the conviction if the typo was confirmed as the cause.

Big media hoohar over not much. She's made a mistake, that's all.

I got pulled 15 years ago for no insurance because there was a number wrong and it showed up on anpr. Insurance company didn't want to know because the onus was on me. Filed a complaint, they went right back to the recording of the call and found I had told them the right number, they had typed it in wrong and I'd not checked beyond getting and email saying you are all covered. Didn't feel the need to go to the Beeb about it though.
