We’ve been really good at keeping our in contract players with these owners, which given the quality of some of them, is some achievement. Speculation of course, but I get the feeling that both players and potential buyers know that Notts County aren’t a selling club unless it’s a really good deal.

I suppose the downside is that the club is missing out on transfer revenue, but it appears that we think it’s more beneficial to keep players to the end of their contracts wherever possible. I’d love Jodi Jones to sign an extension.

Damn! It's not a cynical ploy to sell season tickets then? It's a cynical ploy to keep him!

Both. But it's the timing of the public announcement that makes it a cyncial ploy to sell season tickets and needlessly puts ML in a potentially awkward position.

It is a cynical ploy to put his transfer value up. Good idea.

I doubt it does. He isn't likely to play us for a few seasons, if ever (unless we draw whoever he's playing for in the cup) and if the price is right for both parties he will be up and away.

I don't think this changes anything, to be honest, except it may deter some who were outsiders to get him anyway. I doubt it would ward off the likes of Coventry or Swansea. All parties know the game and will realise it isn't likely to be a deal breaker either way.

For what's worth I do agree with you about the timing in so much as it could have/should have been done at the start of pre-season training, that would have given KC time to get somewhere else and save face and stop the club looking insensitive (which, IMO, this does). To announce it this early into the close season seems strange to me, but there you go.

Can't agree. ML is contracted to Notts County. While he is at Notts County he gives his all and we are perfectly entitled to extract value from him as per his contract. He did not have to accept the captaincy and if he was offered it and declined it then it would have not been mentioned by the club. ML controlled the whole situation. We have been royally trampled on by players many many times most recent example being Bajrami who the club rehabilitated at our cost and offered a new contract and off he went to Burton. ML has not been needlessly been put in any position he did not want to be put in and if the club can get a few more season tickets its called marketing and happens 24/7/365 everywhere. People choose how to spend their money and clubs retailers banks whatever compete for it. You lack a basic understanding of market forces and economics.

I don't see the issue with Bajrami.. we wouldn't have paid that much in rehab; maybe some physio, and strength and conditioning time but the financial costs would have been covered by insurance. Also, on another thread nobody is bemoaning Macca the opportunity to play at a higher level as opportunities don't come along very often, so why not Bajrami? I don't think he screwed us over at all.

I really don't understand the point of view that a player owes us anything when they go through injury with us.

What if he did sign an extension but got injured again? People would be saying he should have done the honourable thing and not sign a contract knowing that he is injury prone.

Football is a short career and players need to get the most out of it, especially tis level.
