I think you've been sucked in by the media, Mista. They've given a list of many popular and also unheard-of sports of which grouse shooting was in a sub section along with paint balling. The media and a Labour minister have just picked up one.

Had they not given a comprehensive list, then they would have been accused of not being clear and the likes of munchetty would have asked what about underwater polo, which is on the list.

P.S. Didn’t realise that, mista. Maybe changes perspective.
RA I'm into my nature certainly nothing against Botham who does a lot for charities . But he took it on his own to go right to the top at the BBC to try and get Chris Packham sacked because he named two game keepers who poisoned and shot raptors The two were later found guilty through visual evidence ( RSP filming them

Ram. One thing I never do is get sucked in by the media I definitely have a mind if my own I'm well aware there are other so called sports that are exempted . The one I participate angling is one of them . I found out about the grouse shooting in today's Daily Express little bit at the bottom of the page Nobody owned to reporting it neither 😊😊

Didn’t know that either, mista. Got a lot of time for Chris Packham...love ‘Springwatch’ etc and his book, ‘Fingers in the Sparkle Jar’ is excellent.
Botham’s cricketing exploits from forty or so years ago made him something of a hero but since then, imo, he’s become a bit of an arrogant sod. Not sure he’s as bright as he thinks he is either.

You’re an angler then. Did a bit myself when I was a kid...not much since, too impatient!
Got mixed feelings about it tbh. I think good - i.e. conscientious - anglers can actually really benefit nature and I’ve come across some very knowledgeable anglers, but...careless inconsiderate ones are a liability, leaving line, litter, lead and hooks all over the place.

    Blimey...we’ve only gone and scored!

I just don't see it as cronyism for shooting, when so many other sporting pursuits are also included.

Personally, I think catching fish for sport is cruel, despite reports saying that it does no harm to the fish. I just don't see how a living animal can have its flesh torn and taken out of its natural environment, water, for a short period of time, without causing stress. Not to mention the damage caused by old fishing lines to other animals. But its a sport of the common folk and nobody would dare to do anything about it.

Don’t underestimate the mental health benefits of fishing, I only do a couple of days a year but even I, rubbish fisherman with few demons, just feel so much better during and after. Accepted that doesn’t help the fish. Wonder if Mista feels like that

Walking does that for me, Andy. Each to their own.
Sure we’ve been here before, but really not sure fishing and shooting are ‘sports’...aren’t they ‘pastimes’?

They, along with hunting, are defined as Field Sports", quite likely as they take place in fields. Definitely sports, just not as you define it.

Pastimes are surely things like macrame, cross stitch and baking?

Ram You obviously very limited in your knowledge about fishing then ,I've never seen anybody tear a fishes flesh , In certain the Lairds in Scotland and our Royal family would not count as common folk they fish all the time . As for discarded line injuring animals ,it does occasionally happen and I can't condone that . But it's usually a story hyped up by the media .So I take it you don't eat salmon, tuna, cod etc because they are all taken out of their environment I've fished all my life ,never killed one but in many times I've caught the same fish within minutes of returning it . If it wasn't for the 1.8 million fishing licence holders who pour millions of pounds into the Environment agency coffers , anglers are the ones who report pollution and poaching which believe me is in a massive scale with Eastern Europeans who poach in a massive scale because they eat all and any fish I'm not trying to protect fishing because I know it's highly emotive subject I just think people should look beyond the media hype

Fishing, ‘takes place in fields’. Really?

Methinks you’re confusing it with ‘groping for trout in a peculiar river’, GP.
