  • Brechin in the Highland league next season

    Comment

    • Well if there’s one thing I can guarantee about Brechin, it’s that it’s not in the highlands.

      • Is this the obvious flaw in the pyramid system that was bound to happen eventually? Wick to Brechin and vice versa...or is a trip like that somewhat overplayed and not such a big deal at all?

Neither are Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Turriff, Pitmedden, Huntly, Banff, Buckie, Keith, Rothes, Lossiemouth or Forres. Nor were Peterheid and Elgin.

Grantown, Nairn, Fort William, Inverness, Brora and Wick are in the Highlands.

It may be that someone, ignorant of the palpable and obvious cultural differences between the Highlands and NE Scotland, used the boundary fault (Stonehaven-ish to Dumbarton) as the basis for the League’s identity, or perhaps the League was initially composed of a greater number of clubs from the cultural Highland area (eg Inverness at one time had four representatives Clach, Thistle, the Masons and Citadel).

For all Wikipedia’s faults, one thing it has got right is its map showing the outline of the Highland area.

PS the kilt is NOT my delight

That would be an exception. Getting to Brechin will be easier than accessing Wick or Fort William for any club east of Elgin.

Edit: Brechin, of course, will bemoan the fact that their away matches will involve some long journeys on worse roads than they’ve become accustomed to. The A96 on a winter midweek will be character-building, I’m certain.

I don’t think they’ll mess with the identity. It’s long-established. There is already the North Caledonian League, which is the next tier down, and has an enthusiastic following and a good standard. Pacman and Bogbrush are more conversant with its status and quality level than I am, of course.

They’ll be told to **** off, I think.

Brechin fans are already on Fitba North asking about pubs and other such important (edited to take out vitaal (sp) which is censored - you’re an arsehole, Sibo) info, and seem to be happy that it’s a new adventure for them. They’re suggesting a big clear-out of players, so it’ll be interesting to see how they adapt.

Ah weel if that is the case then that’s 12 points we will miss out on next season. Still one less plastic pitch.
