That might have helped a little.

Moved to Holland and joined VRA. Started in the 2nds. Following season, the 4th XI was a mix of Brits, Indians, Pakistani, Dutch and a Swede. They were seen as being hard to manage. I was asked to captain the side. Season 3, having finished 2nd in the first 2 seasons, we won the League having won every game, promotion saw us as a perennial midtable side. Not bad for a mixture of journeymen. The Championship season saw Qui Vive from Uithoorn runners up. Next season they asked me to coach them. In 3 successive seasons, they went from the 4th klasse to the 1st klasse which was actually the 3rd League in the pyramid. I was looking forward to coaching them at that level. March/April time, I got a call, they had decided to get a new coach, A Dutch International who played in our 1st team and he had, in his younger days, played a couple of one day games for the West Indies. They got relegated. I was asked to pick up the reins. I graciously declined. 2 more successive relegations saw them back one League below us and I thought "justice".

One of the most humiliating performances ever by an England cricket side today. What is going on?

Too little too late since last Tuesday, but turnarounds don’t come much more spectacular than that. Superb from Bethell, Root, Buttler and Archer.
