It may just be nostalgia but I seem to remember Spencer being some player for notts in the half season he got before his injury.
was Cal any good tonight ?

There's no doubt about his talent when he wants to use it, but there is clearly something wrong either with his mental state or his overall attitude, as demonstrated during his time at Newcastle and at NottsOriginally posted by matt_magpie View PostStill struggling with the fact Roberts is playing in the NLN.

And the tw@t that did it bragged about it in the pubs in Arnold afterwards.Originally posted by MAD_MAGPIE View PostI thought Jimmy Spencer was a good traditional target man who held the ball up very well and was capable of being a good league two/one striker. His record was decent at the end of the 13/14 season when he came in from memory. I also think that he would have given much more had he not suffered the knee ligament injury he did away at Arnold Town in pre-season which kept him out for most of the 14/15 season.

To drop from the SPL to NLN like Cal has suggests there is sadly more to it. I don't think he has confidence in his body to do it at a decent level any more. Hamstring injuries have ruined his career.Originally posted by tied_up_in_notts View PostThere's no doubt about his talent when he wants to use it, but there is clearly something wrong either with his mental state or his overall attitude, as demonstrated during his time at Newcastle and at Notts

I keep my eyes on him as I thought he was amazing when he first arrived. Who can forget that goal at Barrow. He is back in the Scunny team now so hope he can stay injury free and build back.Originally posted by slack_pie View PostCal was electric when he first arrived at Notts. If he'd stayed injury-free, who knows where his career could have taken him. Pretty sad really.

Jimmy Spencer and Ronan Murray was a really good striker partnership until injuries hit both of them. Murray was really good at feeding off Spencer as Spencer would usually have a couple of players around him making space for Murray. Proper old school big man little man combo. Had they both been fit after the great escape season, I feel we'd have been able to kick on but sadly, it was the begining of the end of that part of the good times before our slow slide into the national leagueOriginally posted by BCnotts18 View PostWatching Curzon Ashton v S****horpe, with Cal Roberts and Jimmy Spencer sharing the pitch on opposing sides.

A real shame. His close control and dribbling ability was exceptional. Scored some excellent goals as well. If he can play consistently for Scunny and pick up some form, there’ll be a decent move upwards for him I’m sure.Originally posted by slack_pie View PostCal was electric when he first arrived at Notts. Cal's career has been marred by injury.
At 27 though, he needs to concentrate on contributing to the team he's playing for. You are NOT a star if your'e playing in NLN at that age.
I hope he can find a way to the EFL. The route to that is probably easier than trying to be a star at the lower levels - just channel your abilities to the service of the team and que sera sera

Why do I say that? Cal wanted to be the main man, but he was playing with someone who is now playing 4 LEVELS above him (RR). He should never have pulled stunts like taking pens and free-kicks off him. Serve the team, play your role, and you'll rise up if you deserve to. I really hope it happens for him.

I remember Cal would pick up a lot of yellows for being petulant but I don’t ever remember him acting like he was the main man and taking penalties off people.Originally posted by the_anticlough View PostWhy do I say that? And let’s be fair when he was fit, he was the main man.

Agree. At the time he was at Notts he was better than Rodrigues who Ardley could not get the best out of. Once he settled in and was well managed however....Originally posted by kill_the_drum View PostI remember Cal would pick up a lot of yellows for being petulant but I don’t ever remember him acting like he was the main man and taking penalties off people.

Still he is another astute signing that we did well out of.
