I know that but still no actual EFL senior management experience let alone promotions in the EFL. In an ideal world I?d want that but there will be people out there here and abroad with all the qualities we need but obviously will be seen as a risk, that?s the owners challenge.Originally posted by upthemaggies View PostThat's not the whole story though is it. Des Buckingham is Oxford born and bred and had worked his way up at Oxford United before gaining more experience abroad, including NZ U23s manager before returning home.

Like I said when Joao Alves was favourite, this isn't the time for an experimental appointment.Originally posted by durhampie View PostWe need to get this appointment right. Ive never heard of this guy, and from the outside it would look to be a very underwhelming appointment, if thats the case. Division 2 is not the place for these type of guys.. As SM found out...
Fans were generally tolerant and gave the comparatively unknown Stuart Maynard every chance because the comparatively unknown Luke Williams had previously proven to be a great call, but the outcome of the Maynard experiment was disappointing, as proven by his dismissal, so now is a time to select a recognised name with a solid record.
We're not in Trew/Fullarton territory by any means - the owners still have plenty of credit in the bank with most fans - but putting an Alves or a Solberg in charge at this moment would indeed be underwhelming, to say the least, and would put either of them under pressure from day one. It's a moment to go with an appointment that's sensible and demonstrably sound.

So you want a successful manager, that's been heard of, that's willing to be a manager of a league 2 club that's "right" for the league? Were these the characteristics of Williams and Burchnall?Originally posted by durhampie View PostWe need to get this appointment right. The issue we have is we all probably ideally want a leader with ability and fairly recent league promotions, the issue with that there?s very few from a statistically point of view and also probably most of them have are working a level or two above now.
If we want a manager with more success than failure on their CV then like any other club we will have to look down not up and there?s the issue, below is non league or foreign leagues and there?s the issue for many fans.

I doubt we will bring in anyone with a strong enough personality to challenge the way the club has done things in the last few yearsOriginally posted by matt_magpie View PostThe issue we have is we all probably ideally want a leader with ability and fairly recent league promotions, the issue with that there?s very few from a statistically point of view and also probably most of them have are working a level or two above now.

Why do they need to challenge the club? I get recruitment wasn?t great at all in Jan as we didn?t get what we needed at the time but overall it?s been good and why would they challenge trying to play more attractive football if that?s their mantra too?Originally posted by Could'vebeenacontender View PostI doubt we will bring in anyone with a strong enough personality to challenge the way the club has done things in the last few years
I just want them to be strong enough to lead the team and of course they should challenge the owners on recruitment at times but it?s hardly been broken over their tenure.

I hope you're right. Not in terms of having a strong personality of course, but in terms of challenging their employer.Originally posted by Could'vebeenacontender View PostI doubt we will bring in anyone with a strong enough personality to challenge the way the club has done things in the last few years

A "yes" boss then. These are your tools, get on with itOriginally posted by Could'vebeenacontender View PostI doubt we will bring in anyone with a strong enough personality to challenge the way the club has done things in the last few years
I'd say this is why an appointment is taking so long. Not too many Coaches like to be told what to do. Some will buy in to it, others will say fcuk that after the interviewLast edited by irishpete; 08-06-2025, 04:27 AM.

Has something happened with Notts I?m not aware of recently as it feels like I?ve missed something.Originally posted by irishpete View PostA "yes" boss then. These are your tools, get on with it

As far as I know we moved to the head coach model towards the end of the Ardley era and it?s hasn?t changed since. Of course it will put some people off but why would they apply when it?s quite clear what the role is? This isn?t alien in the industry and becoming a lot more common over here too.

How many clubs use this model? I bet less than a handful especially outside the Prem. Coaches will apply to see if the rumours of how we operate are true & some just for nothing to lose experience. We know the owners want the ball on the ground & players signed without a Coach in place. We did it last week, we signed players in Jan for the future not for the here & now to push on in the autos. We did it before Williams came in. Ardley had to change his style under them & struggledOriginally posted by matt_magpie View PostHas something happened with Notts I?m not aware of recently as it feels like I?ve missed something.

Less than a handful? I googled ?how many clubs in the EFL have a director of football? as that?s primarily the indicator of a model similar to ours? Head Coach deals with the players? DoF the running of the club which will include player recruitment. The answer was at least 18 of 24.
If you were a more than decent football manager/head coach the Notts job would appeal. It?s less work. That said, you would want some say in player recruitment, which I know LW alluded to was a collective effort.
I really don?t think the Notts job is unappealing to the many prospects out there? football has evolved and statistics have never ever been so prominent. Having owners who excel at this side has to be a huge plus for Notts and any new HC.

Older coaches might do that, because they came up in the era of 'football managers' controlling all aspects of the team, but the younger generation of coaches are much more attuned to the 'Head Coach' concept, where they're one part of a bigger machine. They still have an important say in all aspects, such as recruitment, but not the only say. I suspect that's one reason why all of the brothers' appointments have been relatively young. It's too simplistic and probably inaccurate to say the club are after yes men, but they're certainly after Head Coaches who can operate as part of a team, alongside the DoF and others.Originally posted by irishpete View PostA "yes" boss then.
