As a matter of interest for all, I would ask this question slightly differently to better fit into our club situation.
If you hired an electrical contractors firm and multiple electricians turned up with a Supervisor/Team Leader/Manager and the they did a really bad job who would you blame or how would you apportion the blame between the electricians who did the work, their supervisor or the General Manager/Owner of the electrical contractors?
I think he's a bit better than average for this league but for arguments sake lets say he's average. On that basis we obviously should aspire to get better than average who do people think we should get? Reality is do we go for a manager with league experience, but won't have the most impressive CV or we get one from this league or below with a decent record or go for the risk on high profile ex player. Would actually be interesting if football radar are monitoring managers via data and it's their intention to take that route should Ardley leave.
Good questions, I realise it's certainly not easy to find a good manager and it will be interesting to see who the next one is, because it will be the first one appointed by the Reedtz brothers. I think it's obvious that Ardley is here for the rest of the season, so we have to hope he proves to be better than average. I just don't get why anyone would want to stick with a manager they class as average for so long, just because the next one might be worse. That seems to be an acceptance of mediocrity to me.
Please note I've asked Ken who he considers who the "good managers" Notts have employed in the past 20 years not to illustrate the obvious low numbers. Let's be honest at lower league levels there is an expected scarcity for a reason.
The reason I asked was "good" is clearly very subjective to each person, so wondered who the person posing the question thought was a genuine "good manager" previously?
Whenever there are strong calls for a manager to be replaced, when the same people are asked for a realistic replacement it often goes very quiet. I don't know why that is the case. Let's go get a "good manager" to take us onwards and upwards.
The theory used to go,''You need a Non-League manager to get you out of Non-League''. ie: Paul Cox who did the job for Mansfield Town, taking them to 3rd in his first season and Champions in his second. Not too sure that's even true anymore as The National League is most prob nearer to the quality of FL Div 2 now that it's ever been. I think the generally accepted theory on this board is prob the correct course of action. Give Ardley till the end of the season to get the job done, if he doesn't, get rid. Will the Danes thinking be in tune with that theory, Gawd knows.
The only reason I believe he's better than average is he obviously he got a team with limited resources promoted and did keep them there. On that basis you should think a club with higher resources then the same should happen. He obviously is very pragmatic in he wants to build something long term and it also shows in the style of play and I think that's where the frustration comes in, we just want to get out of this league. I do agree if we don't make a proper fist of it this season then it's probably time for change, but we're in the mixer now, from the sides I've seen play there's absolutely no reason we shouldn't challenge. My biggest concern is I don't believe we have a second proven/dependable striker, in my opinion both Thomas and Dennis were quite a lot better than what we have now.
I think also you need a bit of luck in this division / things fall into place, the ones that have got back out it took around 5 years. If it was 2 or 3 automatic places I would be very confident with Ardley we would get out relatively quickly, problem is because its lower league football and inconsistent you can get your Barrows, Torquays (so far) that come from nowhere and it totally scuppers you.
Some excellent points made, particularly NA being better than average with reference to Wimbledon.
Who replaces NA and what experience, standing etc they have will be driven by who’s available. I would also go as far to suggest that any change would/could also be driven by availability e.g. if the season finishes and we were to be promoted. Our owners still may decide, if the right person is available, that a change is the right course of action.
Of course, the reverse could also be said. Particularly when the COVID situation is factored in.
