Exactly.
He's clearly told to put himself about and unsettle defenders when he comes on as sub but presumably would play a more measured game if he started and had someone playing alongside him.
One thing is pretty clear, he has an eye for goal and gets in some dangerous positions when we attack unlike our other so-called strikers.
Why do people state things like "he's not fit enough to last 90 minutes" as though it's fact? The truth is we don't know because he's never been given the chance and probably never will be because Hugill always seems to be one of the first names on MT's team sheet.
Like when he comes on we normally play more than 1 up front. Kelly can't play the lone striker role like Hugill, neither can Nombe. We need to change to 2 up front so that Nombe and/or Kelly can get more game time.
Drop Cafu for me, he was playing as the attacking midfielder behind Hugill for most of game before moving to the left when Kelly came on. With Cafu's lack of effort we might was well have a 2nd striker on sitting behind Hugill. No point in carrying Cafu.
Couldn't have said it any better, he is slowly becoming a passenger from his initial good start for us. Again yesterday, I thought he was hardly involved. We know what he's capable of delivering so why has he suddenly switched to a lower gear? We simply have to start two up front to change our 'already known' approach to any game. Come on Matt.....JUST DO IT!
My guess is he's switched to a lower gear because he's frustrated with the negative tactics that don't suit his style of play. Cafu played a part in Nottingham Forest's promotion campaign to the Premiership and when we signed him he came with much praise from their fanbase. In him we have a player with the class, ability and experience to play a huge part in our campaign this season. He knew when he signed that his efforts would be at the opposite end of the table to his time at Forest, and he has shown what an asset he can be. So if his attitude has changed it could be because 1) he's a bad egg with a bad attitude or 2) he's frustrated with tactics.
Only Cafu has the answer. But I will say that Matt Taylor signing him was one of the highlights of transfer window so either way its a real shame it has gone sour
Forgive me if I am wrong but isn't the mantra to the fringe players " Go and Show me why you should be in the team"
GK has done more than anyone in his cameos to deserve his chance. Whenever he gets the ball. He makes something happen.
Remind me who turned 2 defenders, went directly at them and won the free kick that he scored from?
I agree with you about Cafu Derek, and I would think he's frustrated with the tactics, as we all are, but he got a full 90 mins in on saturday for the first time in a while so hopefully he will now kick on for us, a very talented player who imo will be really important for us. UTM
I would add to this and say Hugill can't last 90 minutes either, not because he isn't fit but because he is asked to play on his own and battle two 6ft 4in CBs. The issue is not the players, the issue is the manager and his coaching staff. There is NO IDENTITY in this team. I dislike comparisons to previous managers but Warnes, Evans and warnocks teams had an identity, it didn't always work and yes most of us questioned decisions etc during their time at the club, but you knew what you could expect, they built a team to our strengths and managed around the constraints of budget etc to the best they could. Anyway back to the thread subject, GK hasn't had a run in the team to see what he capable of, you can't play him up on his own but with someone beside him he can play a role, cross the ball and he is likely to be near it, hard to say that about our other strikers. I would start with Hugil and Nombe at home, with Odifin just behind them, GK would come on for 20 to 30 minutes in those games to build up his contribution. When we played well against Coventry we got the width from Revan and Dexter by moving Bramall into a three, I know a lot don't like it and we are short of CBs but if we could give it a go it allows us to have 2 up front, in a 3-5-2 formation, the central 3 are Christ, Rathbone and Odifin the more advanced. This also makes Cafu fight for his place, when Lindsay and Fergie are back it gives us a lot of options.
