Thread: Mugged....again

Seems to be a bit of revisionism about how good we were under LW. I thought I was maybe misremembering so I checked a random game from Sept 2023. It was Forest Green. We won 4-3 against a team that eventually went down.

We managed - according to the stats - a total of 11 shots. Fortunately 4 went in. But we were hardly creating chances at will.

Week after we scored 4 again from 21 shots. Still less than yesterday. Unfortunately we managed to concede 5.

Week after at Barrow we managed 5 shots. That is not a typo.

    Then it was Mansfield....

At Harrogate we broke the world record for the most passes back to the goalkeeper since it was made illegal to pick it up. The home fans cheered every one.

So I fail to see how the football now is so much worse. In fact I see enough evidence that we're prepared to vary it a bit which we certainly weren't under LW.

Excuse me for asking, but did you go to uni and graduate with an honours degree in cherry picking? I could easily cherry pick certain games which would suggest the opposite to yours, but I won't because I realise it would make me look a bit of a tw@t.

I was at the Harrogate away game last season, and it was so bad. There was a growing sense among the fans around that time that we'd be found out and had run out of ideas. I loved LW and would welcome him back, but there were signs towards the end of his reign that something wasn't right. His style of football was often exciting, but it could be frustrating too, and sometimes even embarrassing.

Nope, I just picked a random starting point and went forward 4 weeks. Feel free to pick your own random 4 week period.

I included Harrogate because that was the point I conceded we'd lost the plot.

Never looked likely to create chances in the first half? We had loads of chances, we just didn?t score them!
If we?ve had 24 shots Vs 8, we?ve tactically got it right.
The problem was solely down to the fact we didn?t kill the game off.
If we had scored 3 of those 24 chances yesterday, nobody would be saying we were lucky or it was undeserved. We were comfortably the better team in every aspect of the game apart from the most critical part which is the score.
That is just denying that when the 2nd half curtain goes up NCFC are a different side than when the 1st half curtain closed, we ARE a different side 2nd half, that has been displayed time and time again, we drop points/lose games because something happens, if we still had the tea lady we could blame her but we don't, as i said it is an enigma.

We lost the tea-lady to a secret love tryst with Dunk.

I've already explained why I won't do that.

Try picking another "random" 4 week starting point and I'm sure it will show the opposite.

Well the next 4 Saturdays after that were: Shots 10,15,16,11
    Goals 2,0,3,0

But this is a PITA. Can UTM help out?

Hmmm. So was that 4 week spell 'random' or 'researched'?

I don't think you would have posted it if it didn't go your way.

The point I'm labouring to make is that my gut feel is the football is not substantially different from what it was under LW. The stats say we actually had less attempts at goal, but we converted more often when we did.

So we were, arguably, creating fewer but better chances. Bar for a couple of exceptional games, we weren't cutting teams open at will.

It also feels to me like our average possession is lower this season, because we're a bit more likely to try something. Only a bit, but it feels different to the super-cautious don't-do-it-unless-its-definitely-on approach.
