Anyway, I really believe he needs a 2nd season. It's a tired old trope, but today's football world is too quick to sack someone.

As a dons fan I will (nearly) always back the manager in the hope they can get it right, largely as I have no say over their sacking so can only really hope for the best. Sometimes they need to go - Robson, Glass - but they still got my backing until they're gone, even if I've thought they couldn't get us out of the mess we were in. In Goodwin's case I don't think he should ever have bee allowed to set foot in the door. Really rankles they finished above us in the league.

That said - Jimmy (in my opinion) clearly knows a thing or two about football, given the relative success he had prior to us. It just hasn't quite clicked for large parts of this season. But I have to believe he knows more than we do about the game and can turn it around. There are obviously some who walk amongst us whose knowledge transcends that of most mortals, but for the rest of us (who don't see things quicker than most people) I think he deserves a fair crack. Unless he is dragging us down to the bottom half next season I am happy to see if he can turn it around.

The lack of consistency, and the overnight jump from almost over night 'we can't lose' to 'we can't win', bugs me no end. Out of 38 games I reckon we should win around 20 and be hitting 3rd, and dare I say even 2nd (yeah yeah, we should be aiming for 1st but that really isn't happening anytime soon - not due to a financial gulf of course, but other mitigating factors). So, yes, Jimmy has some improving to do over the next year, but I think he can, and will support him until it looks like he might drag us into a mire, and hope for him to be replaced before that spirals too far - but not before giving him a fair chance.

I wholly admit I might be a little too generous with the time I would give someone to get it right, but believe that chances should be given rather than staying on the constant merry-go-round of new managers.

To go with another overused example - imagine if the greatest manager to ever walk the earth wasn't give from 1986-1992 to get things right. The following 2 decades of a certain teams successes would have looked very different. I still think he has something to offer and look forward to him hopefully fulfilling it this season.

We have the budget for 3rd, but have no god given right to be there. We should also be looking at decent cup runs every year, with a win in one of the cups (in my opinion) every 3 or 4 years. In the 114 years (?) outwith the Ferguson years, we have won the league once, the scottish cup 3 times and the league cup 5 times (Vintage might be able to clarify if I am about right with this). That is a grand total of 9 domestic honours over 114 years - an average of an honour every 12 years. Going by that we are just about due one. We should be doing better but have clearly been a very lazy team for 114 years.
A good post. Although I reckon a certain someone might disagree with certain aspects of it, so be prepared to be chastised!

I too want Jimmy to get next season, but my goodness there is little margin of error for him to work with and hopefully he has learned from mistakes this season.
My biggest fear is that he keeps persisting with his system without tweaking it.

A cup win on Saturday will more than make up for our patchy league performances and buy him the time he needs to fully put his system into practice.

I don?t mind a different opinion but it must go both ways as it would be ridiculously boring if we all thought the same.

Your biggest fear is him persisting with his system?..he will continue to do that. Most often than not an under pressure manager for some weird reason refuses to change their system/players etc as they think it somehow shows a sign of weakness. I would argue the weakness is already there with their system etc and they must address that problem to survive.

It?s the basics of life?if something isn?t working, change it for the better as you will be left floundering.

Let?s hope for The Turnips sake he gets the cup win. I am extremely confident he won?t but I am gutted we are the way we are. A cup final should be something to look forward too?..not something we dread.
