Not this one. The reverse happened when I still lived in the UK but I'm not one to do the dirty on a loved one. Wasn't made that way from the start and then, experiencing first hand, what a catastrophic effect it has on you, tripled my resolve to remain true and, now in my twilight years, I'm not in any real danger of being anyone's, other than 'er indoors, flight of fancy.

I?m not even sure how big these days Sith, but certainly big news for some reason, I?d assess infidelity as the bigger ?sin? based on those who?s opinions I?m aware of, and my own. Doesn’t really matter what was discussed at length before Sith joined us. What really matters is what has happened since and all the promises made for a brighter future out of the EU have, since 2016 - or 2019 if you prefer - now been proved to be groundless.

The Brexit campaign was built on lies. Several on here recognised that at the time. You claim to have voted ‘Remain’ so even you must have suspected. Time to stop defending the indefensible actions of Farage and Co. and recognise that, although they may have done very nicely out of it, our country certainly hasn’t.

As for Brexit, no government yet has embraced it and has been reluctant to introduce anything that upsets the EU.
Starmer has just cut his own throat. A few days ago, he was playing up to the press , with his getting back control over immigration. A few days later, he wants to open the door to potentially millions of under 30's workers, Never mind stabbing the fishermen even further in the back . You couldn't make it up.

And how many young ens, will be going to Europe, compared to Europeans coming here? The Eu has a 15% under 25's unemployment rate. The Med countries it runs at 40-50%

All of them will again screw up, the UK employment, by denying school leavers options and encouraging employers to skimp on training to save money.

Sith, I don't know your back ground, but I worked in industry all my life. I progressed with engineering on the tools to running factorys etc.
Up until around 2000, the UK industrially, had a very good training / apprenticeship system going for the young. Then the EU doors were flung open. Suddenly, company's found they had a glut of labour 10 years older than school leavers, who they didn't have to pay for to train and were happy to work for low wages.

Wonderful, until folks realised, that those so called kids had no where to go and slowly integrated into a life of benefits and woe.
Sure the companies loved it, but the state suddenly had a massive drain on tax payers and other problems like crime rise.
Short sighted bollox, that left this country addicted and vulnerable to imported labour to keep moving. Yet you can't see a problem?

It isn't about rich kids coming over for life experience, its much more serious than that.

If we didn't extend the deal, who'd fish our waters? The remains of the UK fleet, what's left of it?

We already have UK boats taking their catch directly to EU ports. Many of our boats are foreign owned. Where will they take their catch? Likely to still be EU ports as it is now.

Nothing's really changing, is it?

Fats forward 12 years. The deal is coming to the end of its life. Let's say we don't extend EU rights in UK waters, who's going to bring the fish home? Certainly not UK fleets as they are too small in number and capacity. We'd need new boats, new personnel, Who'll pay for them?

What I miss totally from all the online weeping and a wailing is a single constructive word about what should have been done to improve matters and who would fund it.

That's absolutely true, the deal will also enable UK shellfish to be sold into the EU after processing in the UK, shellfish being our biggest fish catch and 70% being sold into the EU.

What people don't realise is that UK fishing fleet owners sold their quota to foreign fishing fleet owners well before Brexit, I mean why wouldn't you give up a gruelling dangerous job, to retire with some nice cash?

Johnson's Brexit "deal" also meant that the UK's main fishing trawler based in I think Grimsby, was denied access to Norwegian waters without further negotiation which the Tory government tried but failed to reach and agreement on.

The new deal is an extension of existing quota's, not an addition but extend for 12 years to give more certainty.

Obviously in any deal one doesn't get entirely what one wants, but overall it seems positive, especially the removal of regulations by the EU on imported food which will reduce costs for exporters or actually allow many producers that had stopped, to export again.

There's some comment. There's some questions. It's not meant to be a comprehensive solution or explanation.

It doesn’t read like an essay at all, basically because it’s only about 220 words long.
What it reads like to me, is an intelligent contribution raising questions about the future of our fishing industry and querying the accuracy of some of the suggestions made about how that particular industry has been allegedly let down, or not, as the case may be.

Your reply reads like a pedant seeking to criticise for the sake of it and surely the planned general move towards reducing restrictions at border controls to pre Brexit levels will help ‘cross-border musician travel’ just as it will all travellers.

I'm rather amused by the faux rage expressed by SNP politics especially that smug Forbes moaning about fishing being shafted (which it hasn't) when the SNP wanted to remain in the EU and express the wish to join if Independence was achieved, which would mean the same or even worse conditions.

The fishing industry spokesmen would be frothing at the mouth whatever the deal, but given fishing is 0.03% of UK GDP and 70% gets sold abroad, with the easing on restrictions for export of other food stuffs is considerably greater value.
