Geldof's actions on the Thames may, IMO, have inadvertantly pushed a few thousand dithering Remainers towards voting Leave. If I'd gone on emotions not facts He would have been the reason I voted Leave. Such a shame, as a teenager I saw him as a kindred spirit when he fronted The Boomtown Rats, I admired him for his ability to mobilize during Band/Live Aid, but now I just see him as an irritating poor man's Bono/Karaoke Russell Brand

Yep, agree with that Andy...important figure at the end of the seventies and the original Live Aid was a huge achievement but since then he seems to have become a bit of an self important irritant.Originally posted by Andy_Faber View PostGeldof's actions on the Thames may, IMO, have inadvertantly pushed a few thousand dithering Remainers towards voting Leave. Taking a wider view of this, I believe that the interference of celebrities in the EU referendum debate (mostly on the Remain side) did much more harm than good, and that's a factor of the disappearance of the 'deference' culture partly fuelled by social media (unless you use facebook you cannot imagine all the ways folk express their hatred for Russell Brand for instance) and partly fuelled by (particularly) the Jimmy Saville revelationsOriginally posted by ramAnag View PostYep, agree with that Andy...important figure at the end of the seventies and the original Live Aid was a huge achievement but since then he seems to have become a bit of an self important irritant.

Wasn't Corbyn traditionally anti EU?Originally posted by ramAnag View PostI see Alan Milburn, Richard Branson, Gina Miller amongst others (including Blair and Geldof
) are shaping up to challenge Brexit. Good for them imo...but where the hell is Corbyn?
But really, the Geldof love in above (I hate the talentless dick) and Blair, is there anything more off putting than irritating self obsessive celebrities trying to get some extra followers?

Well said that man - the cult of celebrity really grinds my gears. One of the most appalling developments of the 21st Century sadly - who gives a **** what they think: think for yourselves, not blindly follow the thoughts of a generally brain dead person who is famous for, um, being famous?Originally posted by AdiSalisbury View PostWasn't Corbyn traditionally anti EU?

The old phrase 'never meet your heroes' has in the modern age become 'never read your heroes' facebook or twitter feeds'.Originally posted by roger_ramjet View PostWell said that man - the cult of celebrity really grinds my gears. Tbf they're all at it...Trump was more than happy to be endorsed by such luminaries as Mike Tyson, Jon Voight, Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan and Ted Nugent but I agree with all those who question the cult of celebrity...who cares what someone thinks just because they're a successful sports/pop star?Originally posted by Ram59 View PostI noticed that Clinton was rolling out the celebrities on her campaign and it didn't do her much good.
On the other hand I would take more notice of the likes of Branson - on subjects such as transport and the economy - and Attenborough - on the environment - than most mealy mouthed politicians.

Mm so the EU is responsible for the Arab Spring, Syrian civil war, ISIS, 2008 financial crash, banks criminal activity, peoples tendency to live life on credit, the BHS collapse, the demise of the steel industry, technological advances and a whole host of other socio economic and geopolitical factors that have impacted on peoples lives?Originally posted by roger_ramjet View PostThe past few threads have raised a couple of interesting ironies. It is particularly ironic that an institution such as the EU, one of whose objectives was to promote harmony in Europe and prevent the return of nationalism / national socialism has set in motion policies which are in fact promoting the return of that very phenomenon. The free movement of labour has given the extreme right a new set of targets ulon whom to focus blame for the plight of the domestic JAMs: predominantly Eastern Europen. The EU open door policies on Middle Eastern "refugees" is doing the same thing. The institution grounded in the concept of "never againon my watch" seems to be creating the perfect conditions and environment for "ywt again".
The second irony is of course that this thread is degenerating into personal abuse and intolerance of opinion on both sides and thus becoming fractious and warlike at the expense of coherent debate. The EU promoting disharmony in a microcosm! You bunch of tossers (more irony)
I'm surprised you haven't blamed Derby's record low pts total in the premier league down to the EU players we had!
The fact that you put refugees in parenthesis rather than "JAMS" is rather telling.
The far right will always use times of economic turmoil to find scapegoats and provide simple answers for people to grasp on to history shows us that.

Oh really? You mean like Farage did when the High Court decision didn't go the way he wanted or like Trump suggested when he said, pre-election...'I'll accept the result...if I win!'.Originally posted by DerbyCountyMad View Post1,452 replies to this Brexit thread. Wow I had to do a double retake. I wonder how many replies there would have been if thread had been "The futures bright the future is remain". I think about 20 as the Brexits would have taken defeat on the chin.
The reason there have been so many replies is because this is a decision which will impact upon us all for many, many years to come and if you care to read back you'll find that the thread was started by a 'Brexiteer' and has been far from monopolised by 'Remainers'.

i see both ramanag and swles views i see lots of rhetoric over a decision that the people of the uk took in an open democratic vote and the decision was to leave do both swale and ramanag except democracy and see mine and others views . i do see the lack of faith in farage johnson and others like i saw the lies of cameron osborne etc. but if this country is to move forwards we must now stop sniping and accept like grown ups the if we lose we cannot keep opening legal loophole till we get our own way. can either of you tell me the outcome of the decision to overturn would be civil unrest civil diosobiedience protests in streetoh i forgot one side has already resorted to this .
