I am absolutely flabbergasted that the UK has only just started quarantining new arrivals on flights. Australia have been doing this for 6 weeks and we are now almost ready to rock and roll again. Its saved a lot of lives.

No they won’t get the 200k. Unless of course there is a spike in the number of people infected in which case their might the demand for it.Originally posted by magpie_mania View PostIt really hasn't! I would agree with daily fluctuations if sometimes it was over 100k but sometimes under. However, two days over (and method of counting questionable) with 6 days under since (and well under) does not mathematically fit to daily fluctuations causing it.
If they can't get near 100k as a daily average because people aren't requesting tests, however are they going to get to BJ's 200k?

Another of the many ways in which Boris's crew has let us down. There will be an accounting but getting past the 'I love Boris' t-shirt wearers might prove challenging. Are you sure you haven't got my posts mixed up with someone else??? I have never mentioned no objective truth??Originally posted by drillerpie View PostWell as you must have said a hundred times, there is no objective truth and everyone just believes what confirms their biases. So that explains it.

So does that bother you that he made that commitment that could not be kept? Or do you think that BJ is expecting a massive spike?IOriginally posted by Notts78 View PostNo they won’t get the 200k. I can't believe that the excuse being made is that there are not enough people wanting the test. Surely if that is the reason we are not hitting the 100k, all they have to say is 'We have more than 100k tests available but people aren't taking them up'.

We've decided not to be tested unless one of us show symptoms. With my wife being a key worker, we were all offered testing.Originally posted by magpie_mania View PostSo does that bother you that he made that commitment that could not be kept? Or do you think that BJ is expecting a massive spike?I

I understand totally as we are in the same position. My point though is why are the Govt not saying this is the reason they are not reaching their target. If it is, why would BJ say they will double a target which is out of their control?Originally posted by navypie View PostWe've decided not to be tested unless one of us show symptoms. I think there were issues with key workers accessing the tests. There are a lot of areas where the nearest test centre is very far away, and even if you don't live far away it can be difficult to access them if you don't have a car. If you look at the map in this article you can see the problem.

That is a fair point. Do you think they will make them more accessible to get up to the 200k? I do wonder how enough managed to make it on 30 April though.Originally posted by drillerpie View PostI think there were issues with key workers accessing the tests. I've no idea. Sending them through the post has its merits (cheap and allows you to claim big numbers, mainly) but there are no guarantees that the tests will be done effectively.Originally posted by magpie_mania View PostThat is a fair point. Apparently you basically have to ram a long cotton bud into your nose and push it until you can't push it any more, and I know two people who have done it and said it was very unpleasant. A lot of people will just jiggle them around up their nose and send them back, and the whole thing will be a waste of time.
The ideal thing would be to have testing centres in easily accessible populated areas, and teams of professionals to carry out tests in people's houses.
Where I live, for example, they put up a testing centre in inflatable tents in a hospital car park. One of the people I know who was tested had healthcare professionals come to her house to do it.
Then contact tracers to find out who else needs to be tested. I think the government is trying to recruit 20,000 contact tracers now, but at the moment I'm not sure contacts can be traced properly. So it kind of makes all the testing pointless anyway.

Another problem we have is those that get halfway across the Channel, phone ( I don't know where they get the number from) the Navy up saying they are in trouble and when we get there, champagne corks are being popped. Yesterday a record number came across putting us all at risk, Covid is rampant in the Calais camps. The very least we should be doing is towing them back to French waters.Originally posted by queenslandpie View PostI am absolutely flabbergasted that the UK has only just started quarantining new arrivals on flights.
